  • What is an NIL Collective?

    A collective is an organization formed to benefit student athletes at a specific institution. Collectives pool funds from donors to help create NIL opportunities for student-athletes. Learn more here.

  • What percentage of contributions go to the athletes?

    ~90% of contributions go to UMass Basketball Athletes through NIL activation and deals. We keep our overhead costs as low as possible and all work and day to day management is done on a volunteer basis. Overhead costs include IT, legal, marketing, content creation, events/experiences, and accounting. 

  • What sport does The Massachusetts Collective Support?

    Mens and Womens Basketball at the University of Massachuetts. As the NIL landscape evolves over time, The Massachusetts Collective will evaluate opportunities to incorporate additional athletic programs.

  • What is an NIL Deal?

    Athletes sign a contract with a Collective to perform an individual or series of deliverables such as: autograph signings, social media posts, events, etc. Each deal is unique.

  • What are some examples of an NIL deal?

    Example 1: Athlete signs a Deal with a Collective to engage with fans on a weekly podcast. He is compensated $1,000 up front and $500 for each weekly appearance. 


    Example 2: Athlete signs a Deal with a Collective with a series of deliverables: fan engagement, autographs, social media posts. The athlete is compensated up front $1,000, and for each specific deliverable, a set and mutually agreed upon amount.


  • Is the University of Massachusetts Athletic Department involved?

    All NIL Deals are facilitated with University of Massachusetts Athletic Department Compliance approval to ensure all student athletes collegiate eligibility are protected and NCAA Rules and Regulations are being followed.

  • Are all NIL deals the same?

    No. Each NIL deal is individually negotiated.

  • Are NIL contracts exclusive?

    No, contracts are not exclusive. The Massachusetts Collective encourages athletes to take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way.

  • Are contributions tax deductible?

    Contributions are not tax deductible.

  • Are there any limitations on NIL deals?

    Athletes cannot enter into deals that promote alcohol, drugs, pharmaceuticals, political advertising, pornography, gambling or betting, or other opportunities that conflict with UMass values or interests. Additionally, there must be quid-pro-quo between the athlete and an individual or business. Athletes may not be compensated based on their performance. Learn more here.

  • How is The Massachusetts Collective Organized?

    The Massachusetts Collective is a Limited Liabilty Company organized in the State of Massachusetts.

  • Does anyone profit from the Collective?

    Massachusetts Collective directors will never receive compensation or profit from the collective. We are committed to efficient fiscal operations while deploying our resources in an agile, aggressive and targeted manner while remaining in strict compliance with all NIL regulations.
